Just released Troublemaker 2: Beyond Dream, I don’t know if you’re one of the very bloody “good games”. My work summary based on the 30 minutes of the demo is that it is unofficial, like a dragon/yakuza game developed on a small part of the budget and set in “fictional” Indonesia. So it’s an open world comedy beat that many other genres have happened to be upset.
This week’s Maw I compared Rockstar’s work to Saints Row, which was pretty much wrong. This is mainly a footing experience, and for one thing, you cannot attack people at random. There are designated gangs in Hoodlm that you are allowed to punch out, and as far as I know, you have to wait for them to get into trouble first. It is extremely polite and passive for the brawler. You can also transform into a temporary dying cow.

Because “troublemaker” is a great name for the urban sandbox brawl. Such noisy Vino energy. Petition calling for the next duty “Bang Street Kids” and the next fateful “Minx”. The previous troublemaker in 2023 (this was pretty well reviewed) took place in high school – and I guess, I guess, I’m wandering around large schools with more fancy social dynamics and delinquent students called “cars” who waste your contacts right away. I want to know how much they can extend this concept of “trouble.” Can you cause problems in outer space?
I’m writing this. Because I’m not selling much on Button Magical Core Combat System, but I’m very impressed with the setting. The demo map is a smash of space amplified by film grains and pop-ups. There are neon sculpture trails, scooter-lined pavements, courtyards roamed by lonely broom pushers, half-composing concert stages, and noisy Backstreets where random guys stand on wooden frames. That last one might be a bug.
It feels like a celebration of someone’s neighbourhood. Sadly, you can’t enter all shops and COOs via local fast food brands. In many cases, they deal with anime illustrations by shop owners. I sound like a massive stinking tourist, I know. I’ve been to Indonesia for video games, and the last one is a very different Afterlove EP.
One of the early hurdles to overcoming is humor. I don’t know if it’s inherently awful or not localized in English. Perhaps it’s both. Example: Drop straight into one of the demo’s free Roam modes and approach a man fishing from the bridge. We barely swapped when his wife ran away and denounced him to fish all day. She makes an astonishing reference to his “Paul” and works by bullying him with the threat of withholding “our nightly spicy time.” I’m left on the bridge, but I have no questions. And Paul. I try my hand to fish myself, but if I fail the QTE I lose interest.
The jokes improve over the course of my demonstration, but the English translation is uneven. After that I met the aforementioned dying cow and defeated the horn with onlooker gags. I sympathize with moo on the cow. The cow says that talking cows is garbage. The cow was found to be “gived critical thinking by God,” but now its unfortunate fate is to be slaughtered and cooked to Rendan.
I ask if there is final hope for the cow, and it asks me to pass laws that punish corrupt government officials who steal money intended for 5G towers. I feel there may be some jokes I’ve missed here about Indonesian politics (for context: the game’s startup disclaimer places the word “fiction” in an aerial quote). I can’t pass the laws of demonstrations, so the cow settles down to ask me to help it go wild. There’s a mini game there I The cow is thrust far more into a car that bursts conveniently like a soap bubble.
Aside from brutecatharsis, the tragic encounters of cows provide me with some important background knowledge. Shortly afterwards, another side quest will find you answering the trivia questions raised by some brokes that do some sort of Vox Pop LiveStream. Do they ask what Rendan is made of? ah! I know this! The cow had complained about it before!
I somehow get the full mark in the quiz, or at least that’s what NPCS says to me. I celebrate by entering some wood with a mysterious hostile man, including light, violent attacks and parry when I can bother him, and cutting off the brawl. Then I decide it’s time to report on my findings. That’s the end of the descent of a protest where I run through non-Jakarta as a cow and go wild.
Troublemaker 2 won’t take down anything like Yakuza Zero right away, but it has the same abandonment and generosity. At least, going with the demo, it’s a Christmas punt that is an unsettling game joy-filled Christmas, all the sparkling and gags, shaky stage punches. The Creators GameCom team started as a high school project in 2014 and also created many troublemaker games for mobile. I think I’ve caused enough trouble for the foreseeable people, but I’m rooting for them. Read more about Steam.
