The paradox, running from 1337 to 1837, says Europa Universalis 5 “hopes to immerse players in a historically rich and dynamic world where every decision has concrete results for both the inhabitants and the environment itself. The core of this is the introduction of POPS to replace the more generalized demographics of the EU4, “to simulate all living individuals that existed at a granular level in 1337.” The best epic strategy game is something you can really dig into the details and that’s what pop is designed to do.
Each pop is assigned a cultural and religious belief, creating a rich and diverse group “almost everywhere” on the map. These factors directly affect many of the core systems of the EU5 – cultural prestige, available progress, population literacy, and many other actions. It also means that there is a need to be carefully balanced in the desires and needs of different parts of the population, as well as the friction that can be caused by such differences.
“The POPS system makes the EU5 feel like a global simulator, where every choice forms the country’s social fabric,” says Paradox. Pops adjusts dynamically according to needs and player policies. For example, ways to strengthen reconciliation would promote or demote certain social classes. “If burgers and workers produce goods primarily for the economy, nobles and soldiers provide defense, while clergy provide literacy.” If you’re already superior in one area, it’s easier to convert other pops into that speciality.
Of course, your pop needs everything from basics like food and clothing to more luxurious items. Holding surplus makes it easier for the population to grow and promote higher social classes. Insufficient, your workforce and military potential will begin to shrink as pop fades or become motivated. Some of this can be alleviated through trade, but more severe challenges such as natural disasters and diseases must be addressed.
One obvious example of this is Black Death. It will primarily affect the city’s population and spread across borders through trade, and will be forced into strict decisions about quarantining cities or sacrificing potential incomes to ensure citizen health. However, please note that Paradox can randomize dates and initial locations if you wish to switch between this type of widespread disaster entirely or want a different approach on your next playthrough.
Pop allows Paradox to create more interesting choices to sing the best strategy game. Granting privileges to one group can very easily confuse another group. Promoting national religion can unify your pop, but it will lead to alienation of a few outliers further. Promoting more literacy and supporting wealthy pop will help you improve your technological advancement and trade efficiency, but what cost?
In many cases, these decisions will be influenced by your chosen country. “After all, dominating the Ottoman Empire of the Cosmopolitan should be very different from managing a more culturally homogenous Sea Lionfish General,” says Paradox. We recently spoke to Gamescom developers about how they bring some of the best ideas from other games in its extensive catalogue to enhance Europa Universalis 5.
Working in collaboration with Pop is the new EU5 map, “the most ambitious ever.” It’s not just a bold claim, as there are around 30,000 locations, over 1,000 playable countries and the ability to filter the views using over 70 map layers. Expect familiar standards such as “population maps” that display granular pop data around the world, including how to view borders, markets, geographical and topographical changes.
“We believe that, coupled with the ambitious simulations of all living individuals in 1337 and the vast and detailed maps, truly highlights the EU5,” the Paradox concludes. “The detailed pop system with cultural and religious depth transforms every state into a microcosm of society and addresses every decision of the player.” With the release date for Europa Universalis 5 set in November, it won’t take long before you can actually try it out.
