Over two years since then Diablo 4 Now released, Blizzard appears to have finally become more tolerant of the features it needs most. In the new “Flattering Questions” developer video, Diablo 4 community influencer manager Reuben “Bradshed” Marquez talks about the future of ARPGs with systems designer Icelin Hall, live service design director Dan Tanger, and class designer Charles Dunn, who talks about the future of ARPGs. Along with the changes to the drop table and the redesign of the leaderboard, the studio finally sounds like it’s round the corner that it’s desperately wanted from the start.
There are a few notable improvements here, but for me the biggest improvement is that the Diablo 4 Loot filter is ultimately a serious possibility. Blizzard has long been reluctant to introduce it. It says that they want to adjust the drop to feel more valuable, but the reality is that this is never the perfect solution. Diablo 4 builds may not be as flexible as those found in the path of exile, but since all classes still boast sufficiently diverse options, many items simply don’t help with loadouts. It’s good if you want to provide one of the best RPGs, but you need a way to quickly sort the drops when blowing up hordes.
“I’ve definitely heard everyone’s feedback,” Tanguay says. “We did a lot of things we had to do before revamping the itemization. We pretty much “smart filtering.” “He admits, “I think I’ve reached the limits of that approach. I’ll take what I can get. I’d like to see something with the deep customization of Last Epoch’s built-in tools, but even the relatively basic way of quickly marking or undoubtedly hiding items that could be worth it will be a gift from Lilith herself.
The looting table for Diablo 4’s endgame “Lair Bosses” has also been reworked. Hall explains that the team was “eager to make sure players who have no access to the expansion could find all the unique items they were looking for. However, now there are adjustments being made to turn that into a more overlapping Venn diagram: “I’m not going to be very detailed, but I should be able to find loot that feels more specific to Harbinger, Driel, and Andariel.”
I’m tentatively excited about the new season – the “Chaos Armor” it presents is an existing unique souped version equipped in essentially different slots, opening up a huge amount of previously impossible builds. Hall says that you can expect “many different ways to get chaotic armor” in Season 10. They also say you can see the usual uniqueness of the general play as a whole. This means you don’t have to always resort to farming a particular boss. “We can probably hope for a little more way to find uniqueness in the future,” she adds.
Diablo 4 leaderboards and ladders have been the point of conflict for a long time. They are basic features of past games, but Blizzard has not been able to find a satisfactory setup for the latest installments. They tried to add some just to the hatred ship to remove them, but Tanguay says the team is thinking of ways to make them better. “What players are really looking for is a leaderboard that allows us to demonstrate our build mastery in any situation we can throw at them,” he says.
The most core improvements in Diablo 4 go towards both seasonal and eternal modes. This means that you always have them. However, certain powers introduced in each season are usually limited to the very time period. We have seen several attempts in the past to reintroduce common seasonal abilities as permanent items, but Dan says this is on the cards. “We will look for ways to reconfigure these old forces and old effects into future systems.”
That, of course, does not end the dispersion of seasonal features. “On the one hand, we can be very experimental, so we really like it,” Dan points out. “We can try something more quirky and crazy. But we definitely know that many players really resonate with some of these mechanics, especially some of these forces.” In response, Marquez asks if this particular power-based form, which he has found most of the recent updates, has become too routine.
Dan uses build on the cake. “Basic skills, legends, paragons – you’re building layers. The power of the season really does icing on that cake. Every season, we rub off the icing to give it a new flavor. It’s a slightly abstract metaphor, but I’m looking at what he’s cooking and I hope it leads to some delicious results.
Season 10’s “Chaos Perks” is the first step in this direction, says Dunn. “They really interact directly with your player’s skills.” Combined with chaos armor, he believes the new update “really ruins the way you build your character on a very basic level.” He promises “some fun, perhaps quite strong combos” and says he’s leaning towards playing Spiritborn first.
Among other changes in the work, Tanguay bullies Season 10 with the ability to more clearly alert the event “starting in the world” to Season 10. I really love the Diablo 4, but I’m sure there will be more dramatic changes than the past few seasons have introduced.
Diablo 4 Season 10 starts on Tuesday, September 23rd. If these changes change the land, it may be enough to seduce me from the latest POE 2 and the last epoch update. We hope to see more significant improvements ahead of the second expansion in 2026.
