What’s the best gaming laptop? The answer to that question depends on your priorities and budget. The latest laptop packs the Nvidia GeForce RTX 5000 GPU in addition to the AMD Ryzen 9000 and Intel Core Ultra CPUs. High speed models usually run loudly, hot and loudly, making them extremely expensive, but there are plenty of other options that are smaller, lighter or more affordable. Whatever your needs are, we have a laptop for you.

Currently, our top choice overall is the Razer Blade 16, thanks to a combination of style, portability and power. On the other hand, a great budget option is the Acer Nitro V 15, packing a powerful punch for under $1,000, and the ultimate powerhouse machine is the MSI Titan 18 hx. For more options, see the list below and see the tested section that includes the laptops you reviewed. Also check out the FAQ section in this guide for more information on how to choose and find the right laptop.

Razer Blade 16

Overall the best gaming laptop

size13.98 x 9.86 x 0.59-0.69 inch / 355 x 251 x 15-17mm
Weight4.72lbs / 2.41kg
Strong Points

  • Great game performance
  • Amazing 240Hz OLED display
  • Top design and build quality
Cons

  • Very expensive
  • Can’t upgrade RAM
  • Heavyer than competition

If you don’t solve anything other than the best, if you have the right funds in your bank account, you have the right funds in your bank account, and the new 2025 model of the Razer Blade 16 now represents the pinnacle of gaming laptop design. Its solid build quality and elegant aluminum chassis love it when it really looks like a luxurious product, and is even thinner (and quieter) than the 2024 model.

Meanwhile, the 240Hz OLED screen looks amazing with vibrant colors, deep black and contrast.

Razer also pulled out all the stops in terms of specs. The new Nvidia Geforce RTX 5000 GPU brings multi-frame Gen to the table, with the effect of being converted into gaming performance. All benchmarks were fully playable at maximum settings at a resolution of 2,560 x 1,600 on the screen.

However, the Razer Blade 16 is also very expensive. The base spec starts at $2,399.99, but only gets an RTX 5060 and 16GB of RAM. Meanwhile, the RTX 5090 model we reviewed costs $4,499.99.

This thin and light machine can generate a lot of fan noise when playing games, especially when using performance profiles, but it’s much quieter in silent profiles, enabled via Razer’s Synapse software, and is also faster in these settings.

Basically, if you have money, this is the most stylish and powerful gaming laptop you can buy now.

Acer Nitro V 15

Best budget game laptop

PCGamesn Score 9/10
Acer Nitro v 15 spec:

battery59whrs
size14.3 x 9.4 x 0.93 inch / 362 x 240 x 23.5mm
Weight4.6lbs/2.1kg
Strong Points

  • Simple, elegant and refined design
  • Amazing display
  • Solid 1080p gaming performance
Cons

  • The UK version has a small SSD
  • Improve CPU multithreading performance
  • Aging connection standard

Buying a gaming laptop will become quite fast and expensive, and if you look for more powerful hardware, your costs will skyrocket. Luckily, the Acer Nitro V 15 is an amazing laptop with 1080p gaming performance and refined design, making it the top 1080p laptop to play your favorite titles.

Under $1000, this Acer Nitro V 15 offers a fantastic display with a speedy 165Hz refresh rate, allowing you to play anything from story-driven single-player games to the latest competitive shooter with friends. Budget prices mean they are solid laptops for general work and school life, making them the best in both worlds.

This laptop can be grabbed for under $760 on a truly basic RTX 3050 GPU. This is a great option for kids, but I recommend stretching to the RTX 4060 version for around $1,100. Although that’s not a slight difference, the gaming performance improvements are big, with the 4060 being much more powerful and providing access to DLSS frame generation. It also gets a 1TB SSD and 32GB of RAM. Both outperform the 16GB RAM on the 512GB SSD and the 16GB entry-level model.

MSI Titan 18 HX

The most powerful game laptop

PCGamesn Score 7/10
MSI Titan 18 HX Specification:

size15.9 x 12.1 x 0.94-1.26 inch / 404 x 308 x 24-32mm
Weight7.9lbs/3.6kg
Strong Points

  • 4K games are possible at 60 fps
  • Incredible display
  • Amazing CPU performance
Cons

  • High price
  • Very noisy fan
  • Split keyboard

If price doesn’t matter, finding a laptop that is more powerful than the MSI Titan 18 hx will be difficult. The Titan 18 HX, the beast of the machine, can offer the Intel Core i9 14900HX and the mobile version of the RTX 4090.

It has an 18-inch screen that is uncomfortably big and even very loud, with a “lack of finesse” design. Even with the slightly strange design of the keyboard, it is the embarrassing giant of a laptop and has the power to prove it.

This hefty hardware is capable of 4K games at 60 fps and features a powerful CPU that provides all the power you need for both work and gaming. Few laptops are on the same level, and fewer laptops in the same price range.

Lenovo Legion Slim 5

The best value for thin and light

PCGamesn Score 8/10
Lenovo Legion Slim 5 Specifications:

size12.9 x 9.8 x 0.83 inch / 327 x 250 x 21mm
Weight3.86lbs / 1.75kg
Strong Points

  • Great price for OLED screens
  • Slim and light design
  • Solid 1080p gaming performance
Cons

  • Soldering memory
  • Battery life may be better
  • Unable to handle 1800p games

Now I am amazed that you can buy a gaming laptop with such a great screen at this low price. The 14.5-inch OLED screen on the Lenovo Legion 5 Slim offers a crisp, sharp display with amazing colour breeding and works at 120Hz. 8-core AMD Ryzen 7 7840HS gets a decent CPU for money to deliver solid performance.

Meanwhile, the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4060 GPU delivered a $1,299 spec coop for the 1,920 x 1,080 game, and averaged 75fps on Cyberpunk 2077 with super-ray trace presets thanks to the help of DLSS Upscaling and Frame Generation. Sadly, there’s not enough GPU power to run the latest games in top settings at a resolution of 2,880 x 1,800 on the screen, but this little panel game still looks good at 1080p.

On the other hand, the small footprint and weight of this laptop means that it can be easily slid and carried around in a bag, and its chassis is made from a high quality mixture of aluminum and plastic. Our only major complaint is the use of soldered RAM. In other words, it is particular about 16GB of memory that comes with the base specification and cannot be upgraded at a later date. However, this is still sufficient RAM in most gaming scenarios and runs at a high speed of 6,400MHz.

Otherwise, this is an amazingly low priced top-of-the-line machine. If you want a slim, light gaming laptop with a great screen, but can’t afford more than $1,300, this is the model you’ll buy now.

Asus Rog Zephyrus G14 (2024)

The best 14 inch gaming laptop

PCGamesn Score 9/10
Asus Rog Zephyrus G14 (2024) Specifications:

CPUAMD Ryzen 9 8945HS
GPUUp to Nvidia Geforce RTX 4070 (90W)
RumUp to 32GB (2 x 16GB) LPDDR5X-6400

Storage1TB PCIE 4.0 NVME M.2 SSD
battery73whrs
size12.2 x 8.7 x 0.63 inch / 311 x 220 x 16mm
Weight3.3lbs/1.5kg
Strong Points

  • Good gaming performance
  • Delicious premium build quality
  • Shiny OLED display with G-Sync support
Cons

  • Unable to upgrade RAM
  • Minor upgrades from last year
  • It’s difficult to run some games at native resolution

Yes, that’s the 2024 version we’re currently recommending for the time being. I just reviewed the G14 2025 and found that new models, which struggle to control the heat produced, at least in the top spec configuration, all have poor battery life at empty prices.

However, the older versions of 2024 are still available. Sometimes there are big discounts. Plus, it still offers great overall performance on a machine with great build quality and a splendidly amazing OLED screen.

The RTX 4070 is the heart of gaming performance and is suitable for smooth gameplay with high graphical settings on the latest game set. You’ll need to engage DLSS upscaling to play at the screen’s ultra-sharp 2,880 x 1,800 native resolution, but it still gives off a stunning visual.

We’re not yet fans of lid lighting – it’s pointless – a font with a stupid look on the key, but if you can grab the RTX 4070 version of this laptop for under $2,000 or under $1,800, you’ll get a great laptop for a price.

Asus Rog Strix Scar 16

Best 16 inch game laptop

PCGamesn Score 8/10
ASUS ROG STRIX SCAR 16 Specifications:

CPUIntel Core Ultra 9 275Hx

size13.94 x 10.55 x 0.9-1.21 inch / 354 x 268 x 22.8-30.8mm
Weight6.17lb/2.8kg
Strong Points

  • Great game performance
  • Stuns the 240Hz screen
  • Easy upgrade via quick release panel
  • Cheaper than some competitors
Cons

  • Very expensive
  • The keyboard does not include Numpad
  • There are lots of pointless RGB lighting
  • Very low battery life

For the ultimate gaming power of a still slightly portable laptop, the Asus Rog Strix Scar 16 is it. It’s not as slim and light as the Razer Blade or Asus Zephyrus models, but thanks to the cooling, it’s still not as big as a huge 18-inch + laptop, but it’s comfortable to remove those slim machines.

At the heart of this laptop, the Intel Core Ultra 9 275HX and RTX 5080 are extremely powerful components that match this laptop’s 240Hz display to give you a great gaming experience. You can deliver your items whether you need stunning graphics for modern AAA games or 240fps+ eSports gameplay.

With lots of RGB, this laptop feels a little flashy, but the backlight on the RGB keyboard is convenient and the laptop is very well built too. The ability to upgrade your RAM and SSD simply by sliding the bottom panel is also a great feature.

With such powerful components, this isn’t a cheap laptop, but it’s a bit cheaper than the comparable spec Razer Blade 16, while the same spec performance offers slightly higher performance. So, if your priorities are power, it’s something you get. However, the battery life is not very good, making it not ideal as a task/game laptop combination that runs out of battery life all day when games aren’t prioritized.

Asus Rog Zephyrus G16

Highest price slim 16 inch laptop

PCGamesn Score 8/10
Asus Rog Zephyrus G16 Specifications:

CPUIntel Core Ultra 9 185h
GPUUp to NVIDIA GEFORCE RTX 4090 (115W)
RumUp to 32GB (2 x 16GB) LPDDR5X up to 7,467MHz
screen16 inch, 2,560 x 1,600, 240Hz, OLED
StorageUp to 2TB PCIE 4.0 NVME M.2 SSD
battery90whrs
size13.9 x 9.7 x 0.57 inch / 354 x 246 x 14.9mm
Weight4.3lbs/1.95kg
Strong Points

  • Gorgeous OLED screen with G-Sync support
  • Great build quality and design
  • Fair price
Cons

  • The RTX 4090 model does not have enough GPU power
  • Unable to upgrade RAM
  • RTX 4060 version is not available worldwide

The Asus Rog Zephyrus G16 is a great example of amazing craftsmanship and design on a gaming laptop. The aluminum chassis added to the CNC looks and feels luxurious, while the 16-inch OLED screen offers amazing contrast and HDR recreation, supporting Nvidia G-Sync, which eliminates gaming tear artifacts.

Also, the prices are surprisingly generous. Every version of this laptop has the same fantastic OLED screen and an Intel Core Ultra 9 185H CPU. It features six and eight e-cores from Intel’s latest Meteor Lake P-Cores, with a peak 5.1GHz boost clock.

The RTX 4090 in the test sample was limited to 115W, so I recommend going to the inexpensive RTX 4080 or 4070 version of this laptop. Both GPUs support Nvidia’s latest DLSS 3 suite of technology, including AI frame generation for increased performance.

The two main downers are that the ROG Zephyrus G16 uses soldered memory rather than a replaceable module. In other words, you’re stuck with the composition you’re buying. Therefore, if you have the time, choose a 32GB configuration and buy as much proof time as possible in the future. On the other hand, the battery life on this laptop is fine, and the Blade 16 offers quite a lot. Otherwise, this is a delicious premium laptop with lots of gaming performance at the bank and is extremely valuable.

Strong Points

  • Great connection for slim laptops
  • 7 hours of common use battery
Cons

  • Limited GPU options
  • Basic aesthetics

There’s no need to bend backwards to have a solid gaming experience to meet the price of a powerful gaming laptop. HPOMEN16 is proof of this. Just over $1,000 for the base specification, the value offered to budget-conscious gamers is tough.

To reach this price range, HP is wisely focusing on what’s most important in the laptop (its performance), which means the device is not the flashiest. Its cooling solution is spectacularly enough, but if pressed hard enough it can get loud and hot.

IIT skimps connections and battery life. It makes it the perfect machine for games and lightweight tasks such as office work and studying.

Asus Rog Strix Scar 18

Best 18 inch game laptop

PCGamesn Score 7/10
ASUS ROG STRIX SCAR 18 Specifications:

size15.71 x 11.57 x 1.21 inch / 399 x 294 x 30.7mm
Weight6.6lbs/3kg
Strong Points

  • Amazing mini LED panel
  • Powerful gaming performance
  • Relatively small and light
Cons

  • Awful speaker
  • Bad battery life
  • Aesthetics of aggressive gamers

It’s not always better as you get bigger, but the Asus Rog Strix Scar 18 creates a strong case in favor of an 18-inch laptop. Offering top layer specifications up to the Core i9 14900Hx processor and GeForce RTX 4090 graphics, portable games won’t be much faster than this. But that costs quite a bit.

The Strix Scar 18 features a new and improved display. Replacing the matured IPS screen from last year’s laptop, this new mini LED panel is beautiful, responsive, sharp and gives you a great HDR experience. Its chassis employs the typical “gamer” aesthetic despite its obviously cool semi-transparent finish, but it’s not too easy for the eyes.

The ROG Strix Scar 18 doesn’t break the back or the bank (relatively speaking). The only downer was the sound quality from the speaker, which was weak and slight.

In our tests, the Strix Scar 18 spins strong performance throughout the test suite, with frame rates comparable to the desktop GeForce RTX 4070 Super, showing the full power of the GeForce RTX 4090 mobile GPU running at 175W. Additionally, the Core i9 14900Hx clocks similar to the Core i5 14600K, resulting in excellent CPU performance. It’s enough to say that this machine handles almost everything you throw it in.

Asus Rog Flow Z13

The best gaming tablet

PCGamesn Score 6/10

size11.81 x 8.03 x 0.51-0.59 inch / 300 x 204 x 13-15mm
Weight2.65lbs / 1.2kg
Strong Points

  • Powerful integrated GPU
  • Versatile Tablet/Laptop Hybrid Design
  • Excellent battery life
  • Compact and lightweight design
Cons

  • Often impractical tablet designs
  • The keyboard cover does not work wirelessly
  • Very high price
  • Mid-way game battery life

If you like the idea of a laptop to convert to a tablet, but want serious gaming power, the Asus Rog Flow Z13 (2025) is the perfect choice. Despite being a 13-inch device weighing 1.2kg, it has a powerful CPU and GPU that offers reliable 1080p games.

With a high-quality 13-inch, 1600p touchscreen display that can run up to 180Hz, this laptop/tablet hybrid is perfect for eSports titles with both excellent visuals and smooth frame rates. For general use, this tablet can also offer an impressive battery life of over 10 hours. This drops to just an hour to 1 hour and 28 minutes on the gaming benchmark, but it’s longer than most other gaming laptops.

However, there are several reasons why we don’t recommend this gaming machine more widely to most buyers looking for a laptop for a gaming console. The first is that the design of the hybrid tablet is a bit odd. It’s slim and light enough tablet, but the removable keyboard design doesn’t bring any advantages to a regular laptop either.

Another major reason is the price. Above $2,000 the performance offered here isn’t high enough. What Asus has achieved is impressive and if this device hits a specific niche for your needs, its general excellent performance and design is undoubtedly unquestionable. But for most gamers, like the others mentioned above, I would recommend a more traditional gaming laptop.

How to Choose the Best Game Laptop

screen

The screen is one of the core areas of your laptop and cannot be replaced, making sure you get something that meets your needs. Almost all laptops have a resolution of at least 1,920 x 1,080 (1080p) these days, but for most games it’s fine. When combined with a 14-16-inch screen size, this gives an image that looks rather sharp, with 1080p resolution not a major challenge for most graphics cards to provide smooth frame rates.

If you’re interested in a fast-paced, competitive first-person shooter game, it’s also worth paying for screens with a higher refresh rate. For most people’s needs, a 120Hz screen is fast enough, but screens below 240Hz are available for those who play eSports games at high frame rates.

If you want a more crisp screen for even better looking games, higher resolution videos, and more pixels to play when doing regular desktop work, the QHD screen is a great option. The resolution of 2,560 x 1,440 (or 1,600) is sharper than 1080p without taxing as much as 4K.

However, if you want the ultimate sharpness, the 4K screen is great, but the pixels are so small that it can be a bit pointless as you will need to use Windows scaling to make your desktop easier to read. Furthermore, 4K puts a huge strain on the graphics cards of the game. 4K is a good thing to use a gaming laptop, but it’s not a must.

On the other hand, from a screen type perspective, the main choice is LCD or OLED. OLED offers amazing contrast and ultra-fast response times, making it definitely the perfect choice for gaming and watching videos. However, OLED screens tend to be more expensive and can also suffer from burn-in on OLEDs, so if you’re working on a laptop all day long, you might want to avoid OLEDs. There are also many very quality LCD screens.

See also  Stellaris 4.0 "It needs to be improved," However, the director is happy with the launch.

GPU

The main component to look up in the gaming laptop specifications list is the GPU. This is the part that has the biggest impact on game performance. I recommend the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 as the minimum value (RTX 4070 is the best all-round option), but you need to check if the Specs list states the maximum power allocated to the laptop, which may also be listed as TDP. Laptop manufacturers can limit the amount of power that GPUs can use, saving battery life and preventing overheating in some laptop cases. This has an impact on performance. Also, as new generation laptops with Nvidia’s latest 5000 series GPUs are beginning to appear, keep an eye on the 5060, 5070, 5080, and 5090 laptops as upgrades over the 4000 series models.

CPU

The next big part is the CPU, and AMD is the current king with the latest Ryzen 9000 series and 7000 series chips. You need at least six cores for gaming (meaning six P cores on Intel CPUs), and the faster the clock speed, the faster the game. Intel currently has two main laptop options: Meteor Lake (Core Ultra) and Raptor Lake (14th century Core I series), both with their advantages and disadvantages.

Intel’s latest core ultra CPUs are more power efficient, while Raptor Lake CPUs like the core I9 14900HX are extremely powerful, but relatively hot and power-hungry.

Ram and Storage

It is also recommended to choose at least 16GB of RAM. If possible, 16GB is good for games, but 32GB is useful if you’re likely to open many apps and browser tabs while you’re working. It also requires a considerable amount of storage space. 1TB provides a substantial amount of space to install some games.

Upgradeability

Unlike desktop PCs, you cannot upgrade many of the core aspects of the laptop specifications, including CPUs and GPUs, but you may be able to upgrade your storage and memory at a later date. Some laptops use soldered memory that cannot be upgraded and only have an M.2 slot for SSDs, so check this in the reviews and spec list. If you buy a 16GB laptop with soldering memory, it will be limited in life as you will not be able to upgrade after 32GB.

Weight

If you are likely to carry your laptop regularly in your backpack, whether you are using it on the train or attending an event, if you have heavy shoulders, you will start to feel the weight of your shoulders. It’s not a big problem if you want a big laptop sitting on a desk, but if you bring your laptop regularly, we recommend a laptop weighing under 2.5kg and under 2kg.

Building quality

The quality of the materials used to build laptops has a major impact on price, durability and of course the appearance. In general, paying for a laptop with metal construction rather than plastic makes it more efficient to have the screen and components drain heat from hot components when transported to a bag.

Gaming laptops FAQ

Game Laptop or Game PC – which should I get?

This is a long-standing question when it comes to gaming laptops, and it’s dedicated to the entire feature to discuss the pros and cons of choosing a laptop and gaming PC for the entire game. However, in the shorter version, the PC is generally more powerful and is worth better for the amount of performance you get. Pack more powerful components and upgrade each component to suit your needs.

In contrast, gaming laptops are limited due to peak power (which can still be very fast). The fact that most of the time means that your laptop is broken means replacing everything. So, if you have space to accommodate your PC, we always recommend a PC.

However, transporting a PC is extremely difficult. Even a small Mini-ITX system requires carrying monitors, keyboards, mice, headsets and more for actual use, but the laptop has one. Ultimately, you pay a premium for some buyers at the convenience of a laptop and the price worth paying.

Are gaming laptops suitable for school/university/workplace?

Gaming laptops are great for school, college or workplace, but the best types depend on your situation. For schools, portability should be prioritized over power, and cost can also be a major factor. You’ll need a slim, light gaming laptop with good battery life, like the Razer Blade 14, but that model is expensive, so options like the Lenovo Legion Slim 5 with an entry-level GPU, such as the RTX 3050, are a great choice. Don’t want to make your CPU and GPU strong. These are because they drain the battery quickly.

In college, you may need a slightly larger and more powerful laptop, as it is likely to become your main machine at home or on your round campus. Again, models like the Razer Blade 16 are a very expensive option, so a moderately slim 15-inch model with the RTX 4060 is a great bet. The AcerNitroV 15 is ideal.

On the other hand, you’ll want to prioritize a smart looking laptop for your work. So, models like the ASUS ROG G14 and G16 are great options, as laptops with more unusual designs aren’t ideal. There are lights on the lid, but just turn them off and they look amazing otherwise, packed with premium components. However, we recommend the latest Razer blade options as they have far better battery life than the ASUS G model.

How long should a gaming laptop last?

Gaming laptops tend to have a shorter lifespan than typical desktops. This is due to the stress of living on the road and all the components in one package. If your keyboard is worn out on your desktop, you just need to buy a new keyboard, but if your laptop keyboard breaks, you’ll need to replace the entire machine if it requires a potentially expensive repair (if available). The same can be said for broken screens.

In this way, you’d say that the gaming laptop should last between three and five years if maintained. They can last for absolutely long, but if you notice that your laptop is falling apart after a year or two, it’s either the quality is poor or perhaps it’s abusive – you might consider investing in better laptop bags, laptop sleeves, and improved laptop cleaning and maintenance routines. Ensuring that your fan/cooler is not clogged with dust should be a few tasks a year.

What is the best size screen for a gaming laptop?

This completely comes down to your needs. If you need a portable gaming laptop (for example, if you bring it in for a fairly long daily commute with a trip or a backpack), a 14-inch screen is a good option. You can get even smaller 13-inch laptops, but these are not common on gaming laptops.

If you only move your laptop once or twice a day, a 15-inch or 16-inch laptop is the best option. They are not the most portable, but they are OK to walk in a backpack if needed, but they get bigger, easier to read, convenient screens and potentially powerful hardware.

For ultimate power, a 17-inch or 18-inch laptop is the best option. Their size means they can fit more powerful components without overheating, increasing productivity, and getting a bigger screen for eyes blowing and more. But it’s bigger and heavier. These days, there are several impressive slim, light 18-inch laptops like the Asus Rog Strix Scar 18 and the Razer, but with a weight of 3.3kg and a footprint of 399 x 298mm, you don’t want to move around very regularly.
